Field Trip: Walker County Fishing Lake and Turkey Creek Nature Preserve

September 22, 7:00 am5:00 pm

Come along with Birmingham Audubon as we debut a new field trip to the lush woodlands around Walker County Public Lake. We’ll begin with a morning of casual birding around the trails surrounding the man-made lake in Jasper. Then, after lunch, we’ll visit Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, a Forever Wild gem located on the Appalachian Highlands Birding Trail. Turkey Creek is the home of both outstanding natural beauty and the Vermillion Darter, an endangered fish species found nowhere else in the world. The preserve contains some of the most biologically diverse habitats in the region.

The details: Meetup is at 7 a.m. at the Fultondale Chik-Fil-A (215 Howell Street, Fultondale), located off I-65 (Exit 267) on Walker Chapel Road. From there, we’ll caravan and carpool south on I-65 to I-22, and then take Exit 65 toward Jasper.

As always, you’ll also want plenty of water and snacks, insect repellent, rain gear, sunblock, and seasonally appropriate attire. Since part of this trip involves a moderate walk through the woods, comfortable shoes are a must.

Accessibility: Easy to moderate

(Questions about accessibility? Email us for more information about how we can meet your needs.)

The food: We’ll plan for a lunch at local barbecue restaurant in Jasper.

The birds: At Walker County Public Lake, green herons and indigo buntings are a good possibility, as are an assortment of migrating warblers in their harder-to-identify fall plumages. At Turkey Creek, we can expect to see an assortment of vireos, warblers, and Pileated and Hairy Woodpeckers. You can check out the most recent eBird checklists here.

Trip leaders: Matt Hunter and Anne Miller lead this trip; his cell is 205-915-8186, and her cell is 205-902-1389 (day of field trip only). For more information, email the Outreach & Communications Director.
