Birds & Bears November Member Program
November 19, 2015, 7:00 pm–8:00 pm
Birmingham Audubon November Membership Program
“Birds and Bears of the Arctic”
Presented by Maggie Amsler and Ken Marion
November’s membership program will feature a visual visit (no parka needed!) to one of the ends of the earth – the Arctic. Maggie Amsler and Ken Marion, biologists at UAB, will give you a highlight of the stark, yet beautiful Arctic landscape in summer, and will survey some of the prominent wildlife – experienced in two separate trips to the Svalbard Islands of Norway and the coastal regions of Iceland. Views of polar bears will be shown and their changing fortunes in a warming environment will be discussed. The presentation will also include pictures of the spectacular cliff breeding sites of thousands of several species of seabirds, including murres, puffins and several types of gulls. The tour of this high latitude, incredible region will include other animals that are able to adapt to the often hostile environment of the Arctic region. Walrus, reindeer, arctic fox and several types of whales will also make an appearance in the slide show. Come join us for a trip to the far north!!
Due to temporary construction at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Birmingham Audubon will meet in the Adventure Classroom on the first floor for our November, January and February membership programs.
